Steve Lassan has dedicated his career to serving letter carriers and protecting the rights, benefits, and working conditions of the members he represents. For eight years as National Business Agent (NBA) for NALC Region 8, he has worked directly with members, branches, stewards, and union leaders across the region. His leadership style is grounded in experience, education, communication, and an unwavering commitment to ensuring every carrier has a strong advocate in their corner.

 

Born in a small town in West Virginia and raised in a family of six, Steve learned early the values of hard work, solidarity, and service. As the son of a union steelworker, he carries forward a lifelong understanding of what collective strength can achieve.

 

For Steve, union leadership is not about a title, it is about service. It means answering the phone when a carrier needs help, sitting down with a steward to work through difficult issues, traveling to branch events, listening to the rank and file, studying the contract, and fighting for what is right. He understands knowledge is power, but knowledge is only valuable when it is put to work for the members.

 

Steve’s philosophy is simple: empower members and strengthen branches. He believes that giving someone an answer helps them for a day but teaching them how to find the answer empowers them for a lifetime. His goal is to build confident, capable branches with the tools to solve issues and succeed together. Leaders don’t just tell people what to do, they teach why it matters and how to do it.

Strengthening Representation

In 2022, Steve founded the Region 8 Stewards Academy to provide hands-on training from the Informal Step through Step B. Every branch that requests training receives it—whether at their local hall or through Webex—because strong, knowledgeable stewards are essential to holding management accountable.

Contract Compliance

Steve refuses to accept grievance backlogs as “just the way the process works.” “Behind every grievance is a letter carrier,” he reminds us, and every case deserves timely attention. He continues to push for resolution of national interpretive issues that contribute to delays, paving the way for representative cases and a more efficient DRT process. Steve is committed to eliminating the backlog and ensuring members receive the representation they deserve.
