Jim was not only born into a union household, but an NALC household. He learned from very early on the strength and importance of unionism. With multiple family members who were city carriers he heard and learned about letter carrier issues daily.
Â
With this knowledge, when he was hired as a city carrier on Long Island, NY in 1994, he immediately got involved with Branch 6000 as an alternate shop steward and later became the chief steward for his installation. His focus was on helping those around him whenever and however he could. That focus has not diminished to this day.
Â
He has held many different positions throughout his career and has excelled in every one. Whether the role has been either contract enforcement, defending a disciplined carrier, or advocating for better pay and benefits for city carriers, his focus and dedication to the city carrier craft has remained true - what is in the best interest for the craft.
Â
In his current position as Director of Life Insurance, he has brought back the Mutual Benefit Association's (MBAs) short-term disability insurance. Not having disability insurance if you become too sick to work, or if you're hurt off the job, is a hole in a city carriers benefit package. Federal employment does not provide this type of insurance coverage. Jim saw the need and worked to design a policy to offer city carriers who desired coverage with multiple options to fit an individuals personal preference. He has also increased the maximum life insurance coverage the MBA offers, advocated for higher interest rates for the MBA's individual retirement accounts, all while ensuring the MBA remains on sound financial footing.
Â
In addition to running the MBA, he is also assigned many NALC duties. He is part of the Contract Administration Unit, Committee of Laws, and the Uniform Control and Fiscal Committees. He also handles and works to correct many pay and benefit issues from the field in addition to monitoring the article 7 staffing limitations, and working to improve and correct staffing in installations around the country. In addition, he oversees the ADR process in conjunction with the full-time opportunities memo which has lead to thousands of CCAs being converted to career status.
Â
In 2004, Jim graduated from the National Labor College with a BA in Labor Studies.
